Bulgaria is exploring the options for construction of new unit at NPP Kozloduy

26.Oct 2020.

The government has already completed an environmental impact study of the site where a new unit of NPP Kozloduy can be built.

Bulgaria launched a procedure for studying options for the construction of a new unit at the country’s sole nuclear power plant (NPP) Kozloduy, said prime minister Boyko Borissov.

As seen in the video file, energy minister Temenuzka Petkova proposed to the government to mandate state-owned Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) to hold talks with U.S.-based energy companies in order to come up with options for the construction of new unit at Kozloduy NPP – a potential project that will be in line with Bulgaria’s long-term strategy for diversification of energy resources.

Such a project will also to comply with the EU’s strategy for achieving climate-neutral energy production by 2050 and the priorities of the European Green Deal, the prime minister added.

“The project will be developed with modern technology, with an U.S. reactor and fuel. In this way we will achieve 100% diversification,” Borissov said in a separate statement published on his Facebook profile.

Kozloduy NPP is operating two Russian-made units of 1,000 MW each. Bulgaria had to close down the plant’s four older units of 440 MW each prior to the country’s accession to the European Union in 2007 in order to address nuclear safety concerns of the European Commission.
